Based on the German play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening has evolved into an infamous rock musical, with music by Steven Sater, along with book and lyrics by Duncan Sheirk.
Controversial and boundary pushing, the musical which once was banned in Germany was brought to the stage by VCA’s final year musical theatre and production students.
It is Spring, 1891, in Germany, as we are introduced to our protagonists; charismatic Melchior, naïve Wendla, and their circle of friends. The group of German teenagers are on the cusp of Adulthood. The musical follows them as they discover themselves, each other and experience their own sexual awakenings. The results of which clash with the strict social attitudes of turn-of-the-century Germany.
This ground-breaking performance is as emotional as it is poignant.
Since its off-Broadway debut in 2006, Spring Awakening has been performed the world over, including highly successful Broadway and West End seasons. It has won numerous Tony and Oliver Awards.
